Health insurance for nomads — what I actually use

This post discusses safety concerns. Information may vary — always verify locally.

After trying 3 different insurance providers over 2 years, here's where I landed.

What I've Tried

  1. SafetyWing — $45/month. Good for basic coverage. Easy to sign up. Claims process is slow but they do pay out.
  2. World Nomads — Trip-based. Fine for short trips but expensive for long-term.
  3. Local insurance — Surprisingly good in some countries. $20-30/month for comprehensive coverage including dental.

What I Use Now

SafetyWing as the baseline for emergencies + local insurance wherever I stay 2+ months. Total: ~$65/month for solid coverage.

Tips

  • Always keep digital copies of your policy
  • Know the nearest international hospital before you need it
  • Dental work in SE Asia and Latin America is excellent and affordable
