Community Guidelines

Last updated: [DATE]

These are the public-facing community rules displayed at /guidelines. Written in plain language, not legalese. They implement the tiered content policy defined in Online Safety.

Welcome to Travajo

Travajo is a community built by and for digital nomads. Each city is a community where travelers connect, share real experiences, and help each other navigate life on the road.

These guidelines exist to keep Travajo useful, safe, and honest. They apply to all content on the platform — posts, comments, profiles, and images.

The Short Version

  1. Be helpful and honest — share real experiences
  2. Don't facilitate illegal activity — discuss experiences, don't arrange crimes
  3. Don't share people's personal info — this is a safety issue, not just privacy
  4. Don't harass people — critique ideas, not individuals
  5. Don't spam — if you're a business, use a business profile
  6. Content here isn't professional advice — verify important information with qualified experts

What's Welcome

  • Sharing personal experiences, even about sensitive or legally complex topics (visa issues, healthcare access, safety concerns, cost of living)
  • Honest reviews and recommendations of places, services, and experiences
  • Asking questions, including beginner questions — we were all new somewhere once
  • Constructive disagreement and debate — different perspectives make the community stronger
  • Warnings about scams, safety issues, or problems in a city
  • Practical tips for navigating life as a nomad

What's Not Allowed

Never: Facilitating Illegal Activity

You can discuss your experiences with legally sensitive topics. You cannot use Travajo to arrange, solicit, sell, or provide step-by-step instructions for illegal acts.

The line:

| Allowed (sharing experiences) | Not Allowed (facilitating) | |------------------------------|---------------------------| | "Cannabis is widely available in Amsterdam" | "DM me for a dealer in Bangkok" | | "I worked on a tourist visa in Bali — here are the risks I faced" | "Here's a contact who makes fake work permits" | | "Many nomads use VPNs for privacy and security" | "Here's a step-by-step guide to pirating software" | | "I overstayed by 3 days — here's what happened at immigration" | "Just overstay, nothing happens" (encouraging specific illegal act) | | "Some visa agents in Bali operate in grey areas" | "Use this agent, they'll bribe the official for you" |

Why this distinction matters: Sharing experiences helps the community learn. Facilitating illegal acts puts people at risk and creates legal problems for everyone.

Never: Sharing Personal Information (Doxxing)

Do not post another person's personal information without their explicit consent:

  • Real names (if not publicly shared by the person)
  • Home or accommodation addresses
  • Workplaces or employers
  • Phone numbers or private email addresses
  • Real-time location ("I just saw @user at Cafe Luna")
  • Photos or videos of identifiable people without their consent
  • Screenshots of private conversations

This is a safety issue, not just a privacy issue. On a platform where people share their city, exposing someone's identity or specific location can put them in real danger.

Consequence: Doxxing content is removed immediately. Serious or repeated violations result in a permanent ban.

Never: Harassment and Hate Speech

  • No targeted harassment, bullying, or intimidation of other users
  • No sustained campaigns against individuals
  • No slurs or dehumanizing language targeting race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or nationality
  • No threats of violence, even "joking"

Critique ideas, not people. "That visa strategy is risky because..." is fine. "You're an idiot for..." is not.

Never: Exploitation and Abuse Content

Zero tolerance. Reported to law enforcement.

  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
  • Non-consensual intimate images
  • Human trafficking or exploitation content
  • Terrorism recruitment or incitement

Never: Spam and Deceptive Content

  • No unsolicited advertising or commercial posts (use [Business Profiles] instead)
  • No astroturfing (fake reviews disguised as genuine recommendations)
  • No vote manipulation or fake engagement
  • No impersonation of other users, businesses, or officials
  • No scam promotion

Sensitive Topics: How We Handle Them

Digital nomads discuss topics that are legally complex. We don't censor these discussions — they're essential to the community. But we add context to help everyone stay safe.

Visa & Immigration

Posts discussing visa topics may display a notice: "Community posts are not legal advice. Always verify with official government sources."

We allow: sharing visa experiences, asking questions, discussing strategies. We don't allow: facilitating visa fraud, selling fake documents, encouraging specific illegal border crossings.

Controlled Substances

Posts discussing drugs or pharmaceuticals may display a notice: "Laws vary by country. Understand local regulations before acting."

We allow: sharing experiences, harm reduction information, discussing legal differences between countries. We don't allow: buying/selling/dealing, connecting users with dealers, promoting substance use to minors.

Taxation

Posts discussing tax topics may display a notice: "Community posts are not tax advice. Consult a qualified professional."

We allow: discussing tax strategies, sharing experiences with tax authorities, asking questions. We don't allow: promoting specific tax fraud schemes, selling fake documentation.

Sex Work

Laws vary dramatically by country. We allow discussion of legal sex work in jurisdictions where it's legal. We don't allow solicitation, trafficking, or content involving minors.

Moderation: How It Works

Who Moderates

  • Community moderators are volunteer members who help keep their city communities healthy. They can remove content, issue warnings, and mute/ban users within their city
  • Platform administrators handle platform-wide issues, appeals, and edge cases

What Happens When Rules Are Broken

| Severity | Action | |----------|--------| | Minor / first offence | Content removed, notification explaining why | | Repeated minor violations | Temporary mute (1-30 days) | | Serious violation | Account suspension + content removal | | Severe violation (exploitation, doxxing, threats) | Permanent ban, potential report to authorities |

You'll Always Know Why

When content is removed, you'll receive a notification explaining:

  • Which guideline was violated
  • What specific content was affected
  • What action was taken

We don't shadow-ban or silently remove content without explanation.

Appeals

If you believe a moderation decision was wrong, you can appeal. Appeals are reviewed by a different moderator or administrator than the one who made the original decision. You'll be notified of the outcome.

Your Safety Tools

| Tool | What It Does | |------|-------------| | Block | Completely hides a user from your experience — they can't see your content, profile, or presence | | Mute | Hides a user's content from your feed (softer than blocking) | | Report | Flags content for moderator review. Reports are confidential | | Presence controls | Control who can see your check-in status (nobody, verified nomads, all members) | | Profile privacy | Control the visibility of your bio, travel history, and personal details |
